Most New Orleans homeowners use the terms mold and mildew interchangeably. They’re not the same — and treating them as such leads to bigger problems.
What Is Mildew?
Mildew is a surface fungus: flat, powdery, white or gray. It stays on surfaces and is manageable with household cleaners. You’ll find it on shower curtains, window sills, and damp fabric.
What Is Mold?
Mold penetrates and breaks down organic materials — drywall, wood, insulation. It appears fuzzy or slimy, comes in many colors, and spreads via airborne spores. In New Orleans’ climate, mold problems escalate quickly.
Is Black Mold Dangerous?
The most infamous species, Stachybotrys chartarum, produces mycotoxins linked to respiratory problems and chronic fatigue. But not every black growth is this species — color alone doesn’t tell you the risk. Treat all mold seriously.
